Review: Sun Baby Pocket Diaper

Description: The Sun Baby pocket diaper consists of a waterproof PUL outer, microfleece interior lining and pocket opening at the back. It comes standard with a microfibre/bamboo blend insert. The diaper has three rows of rise snaps on the front to adjust the size and closes with snaps around the waist. It also features hip snaps to prevent wing droopage and is available in either size one or size two.

First impressions: These diapers are available in a range of cute prints and I like the fact that the snaps are colour coded to match the print. The microfleece interior is super soft and the flap at the back which covers the pocket opening gives it a more polished look compared to other pockets. The diaper is well made and I like that it comes standard with a bamboo blend insert instead of the more typical microfibre only. It feels like a slightly more upmarket version of the typical rebranded pocket - silkier PUL, super soft interior and thoughtful details on the hip snaps for example (see detail under the fit section) [Rating: 4/5]

Ease of use: As far as cloth nappies go, pocket diapers are of the easiest to use and this one is no exception. Simply stuff the insert into the pocket, adjust the rise using the snaps on the front and put the diaper on your baby. After use, remove the insert and place both insert and pocket in your wash pail. In terms of cleaning, the microfleece makes it very easy to spray poop off of and it's not prone to stains which is nice when you have a poop-happy toddler. The shell dries super fast, while drying time on the insert is a bit longer,  as expected for a natural fibre blend [Rating: 4.5/5]

Fit: For purposes of review I tried the size one which is intended for younger babies and leaner toddlers. And I agree - we get a great fit with still some room to grow on J at 26 months old and weighing 11.8kg.  The hip snaps are unique in that the snap on the wing is the female (flat) snap instead of the male snap which means it won't scratch babies who are on the largest setting of the diaper - a very thoughtful touch! [Rating: 4/5]

Value for money: These pockets are priced on par with other entry-level pockets and I think it's quite reasonable considering the quality and the fact that the insert is a bamboo blend. A great option for someone starting out with cloth or as stash filler. [Rating: 5/5]

Performance: With J being a fairly light wetter we haven't had any issues with absorbency and the diaper delivers in terms of containment. I do think that anything more than a light wetter will require boosting with additional inserts though. The pocket has enough space to accommodate extra boosting if needed. We did not try this diaper for overnight. [Rating: 3/5]

Unique hip snap on Sun Baby Diaper won't scratch baby
Overall impression: Sun Baby pocket diapers are excellent entry level diapers and great  stash fillers. I love that they come in two sizes to give a more custom fit depending on your baby's build. They come in a great range of prints and I love the added details which gives a more polished look - flap to cover the pocket opening, colour matching snaps and the unique hip snap to prevent digging into your baby's skin when exposed. I also like that it comes standard with a bamboo blend insert. I would recommend them to anyone building a stash as they are affordable and easy to use.
